NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3090 Ti Preparation for the upcoming generation
- Apr 03
There were rumors that the RTX 3090 Ti cards are already intended for the next-generation graphics processor under the code name AD102 "ADA". The proposed compatibility of the conclusions between the GA102 and AD102 was communicated to the NVIDIA partners, which received a special BIOS for 600 W to prepare cooling solutions for the next generation RTX 40 series. This will speed up the development process and reduce the cost of the next series.
However, in this story there is something else, apparently, the readiness for the next generation graphics processors (presumably consumes even more energy) is visible to the naked eye, as reported by the observers and summarizes the user twitter @ghost_motley. In many non-standard projects, such as ZOTAC, MSI and EVGA, there are already no components for power supply subsystems that may not be needed for the GA102 AMPERE graphics processor with a capacity of 450 W, but will definitely be required for the AD102 processor with a capacity of 600 W. Missing MOSFET, VRM or even complete 16-pin power connectors can be observed in several non-standard ZOTAC and EVGA structures:
Interestingly, even on the official reference board NVIDIA RTX 3090 Ti Founders Edition there are no components. Until now, the V-shaped design was used only in NVIDIA Fe maps (sometimes it is called NVIDIA's own design), but it is no longer so with RTX 3090 TI, since many custom cards also used this design of the reference board.
MSI Suprim X is a slightly different story. It can have only one 16-pin power connector, but the card was designed to support the PCIE Gen5 standard with a capacity of 600 W if necessary.
An analysis conducted by Igor'sLab confirmed that the power connector, which is now configured to the power of 450 W, can be changed using PJP1 jumpers to turn on the power of 600 W. In the RTX 3090 Ti model, this jumper is missing, not to mention that the power of 600 W requires either an officially supported power supply or 4x 8-pin power adapter, which is not yet.
All high-performance GEFORCE RTX 40 series graphics processors are expected to be equipped with this new 16-pin power connector. The rumors suggest that the default TDP is 600 W can be applied to the RTX 4090 graphics processor. This means that for non-standard structures with higher power consumption, two connections will be required. That is why many existing RTX 3090 Ti boards are ready to support more than one.
