Disputes about who should invest in science: the state or society in the person of private businesses is not subsidized for many years. I am convinced that science is the most profitable investment portfolio for the state, and for business, and individuals.
Investment for state
The direct relationship between the level of development of science, state investment in it and the development of the state itself at one time brought Science Coalition, which includes more than 50 US leading universities, including Stanford and Harvard. They also brought "the formula", according to which, if the state wishes to become a leader in the field of innovative technologies, to create full-fledged jobs and maintain economic growth, it is obliged to finance scientific research by national priority. Today, other high-tech economies takes place this formula.
Private investments
Another important trend is investment in science from private companies. Large international corporations such as #google or #intel have long been aware of the “benefit” of long-term planning and financing of research, because from these discoveries quite applied things are obtained: magnetic resonance tomography, nuclear energy, lasers, etc.
However, today private individuals also appear, investors, ready to invest in science not so much for personal gain or earnings, but in order to help humanity. "Investment charity" are engaged in Bill Gates, Dmitry Zimin, Yuri Milner, Sergey Belousov.
Investing into science and science of education, they help solve such problems as global warming or unequal access to medicine and information. In case of success, their "investments" will benefit and subsequent generations.
Each economy has its own investments
Investments in science are an extremely expensive event. And in order to balance the interests of the state, society and business from the upcoming scientific discoveries, it is also necessary to “grab” the article of expenses for financing research. For this, the state must create market instruments, offer tax deductions, benefits and other preferences, and not “pull” everything on itself.
If we recall how the financing of science worked in the planned economy of the USSR, we will see a clear imbalance of interests when the tasks of the state came to the fore. Often, it was the development of the defense industry, first of all. At the same time, the laws of demand and proposals did not affect these decisions in any way, and the interests of people (consumers) were not taken into account. Washing machines and TVs from Europe were the ultimate dreams for millions of Soviet residents.
The development of science occurs in a faster pace in the conditions of a market economy, while the circle of beneficiaries is also expanding. New discoveries are committed with some practical meaning. If the scientist works in the direction that has a commercial perspective, research is funded, and in the end, everyone will benefit: consumer, scientists, economics, business.
The quality of life of mankind is growing due to the fact that the development is obtained by the ideas in demand by society. In other words, society itself “votes with a ruble” for those technologies that are interesting to him.
Here I want to draw the attention of readers to the fact that the "commercial perspective" has not only irons, kettles, fillers, creams and skillers. High technologies, for example, "smart clothes", the synchronization of the brain of a person with a computer, ultralight and heavy-duty materials, flights to space available to everyone - all this create not team economies today, but a completely democratic market states. And the governments of these states practically do not participate in these developments.
In many developed economies, for example in the United States, the percentage of public investment is reduced by private. Even 60 years ago, the share of state investigation into science in America was at least two thirds, now in some areas 50% and more - this is the money of corporations and individuals or money that scientific and educational institutions earn.
Perhaps the science is not the most "trend" sector for investment. Many states still prefer to invest in sports to increase prestige at the international level, and private businesses in country villas or at best charitable funds. Nevertheless, the picture gradually changes. In the forefront, changes are the names of business trendsetters, which are with pleasure and interest is not only the entrepreneurial community, but also the public. And the wider there will be this list, the scale will be scientific progress.
