Initially, these motors were developed for military helicopters. However, due to its advantages, they were distributed in civil aviation.
Since the first TWZ-117 was purposefully developed for the Mi-24 helicopter, the main focus was on strength and reliability. However, the developers sought to reduce the mass, which made it possible to create a rather light engine.
Specially designed technological processes, a decrease in metal consumption and rational design made TWZ-117 with a practically unique mechanism. For the first time in this engine installed contact graphite seals, which contributed to the reduction of air leakage almost 2 times.
According to research professionals, its efficiency amounted to 86%. These engines are known for their resistance even in severe climatic conditions. For aviation, and even more so military, such indicators are very important.
The first production of the company was open in Zaporizhia. In the early 2000s decided to replicate it completely to Russia. At first, production has used imported components. But today the installation of the VK-2500 type consists exclusively of domestic parts.
Only for 2021, the Russian manufacturer of gas turbine engines released about 300 copies of TWZ-117 and VK-2500. And for 2022, "Klimov" planned a production of 500 pieces.
These engines are popular today. Specialists "Klimov" continue to develop new technical and technological vectors of aviation development in Russia. Over these years, "Klimov" was transformed both externally and internal. And took the position of the world leader in the production of gas turbine engines.
